It’s interesting how different people respond differently to eating/insulin. I just completed my first half ironman yesterday and managed my blood sugars by decreasing my lantus injection from 28 units to 23 units and only having a bolus Humalog injection 3 hours before the race started. Granted, I only checked my sugar before the race and in T2, but in T2 it was 160 and it was 125 at the finish. I never felt like I didn’t have enough energy throughout the race. I think I took 4 gels, a clif bar, and 2 bottles of HEED on the bike and 2 gels, cup of heed and some pretzels on the run to get my calories.
